Siemens

This company has expanded its Scalance M wireless router series by adding two new devices. The Scalance M876-3 is ideally suited for transmitting data via third generation wireless internet access (3G). In Europe, these are the well-known UMTS networks, with EVDO (evolution data optimized) networks being prevalent particularly in North America. Using the second new addition to the series, the Scalance M876-4, users can connect to subnets and automation devices via LTE (long term evolution) wireless standard, widely used throughout Europe. Thanks to their high bandwidths, performance capabilities and transmission speeds, the routers are able to be deployed in a diverse range of applications — Process Industries and Drives Division, Siemens AG, Erlangen, Germany www.siemens.com

PAT portfolio extended with sensors for flowrate measurement
This company has entered into a global development cooperation agreement with the flow-measurement company em-tec GmbH, which provides non-invasive flow-engineering solutions for blood vessels and flexibsatorioousle tubing used in the biopharmaceutical industry. As part of this cooperation, the technology base of em-tec will be extended by jointly developed single-use components, such as FlowTube. This company will exclusively market these as applications and distribute them worldwide as private label products under the brand name BioPAT Flow. BioPAT Flow permits precise, reproducible data to be collected on flowrates and mass balances without coming into contact with the medium during measurement. — Sartorius Stedim Biotech S.A., Aubagne, France www.sartorius.com
These interlocks withstand temperatures over 1,800°F
Smith Flow Control

Smith Flow Control

In recent tests, the GL and QL interlocks withstood temperatures of up to 1,830°F (1,000°C). Performed by Score Group plc, the tests found the QL and GL to be compliant with the temperatures and conditions specified in API Standard 607 6th Edition — 2010 and ISO 10497:2010. The tests verified that, in the event of a fire, the hardware will continue to function and the integrity of the locking mechanism will be maintained. During the test, the lock had one key inserted and one free; following cooldown, the lock remained secure on the valve. Only when the other key was inserted could the lock be moved to the open/closed position, as should happen. — Smith Flow Control USA, Erlanger, Ky. www.smithflowcontrol.com
High-performance safety relays are only 6-mm wide
Phoenix Contact

Phoenix Contact

The new PSRmini safety modules (photo) are said to be the narrowest safety relays in the world, but deliver the performance of a larger safety relay. With an overall width of just 6 mm, they offer a high level of safety, thanks to the use of force-guided contacts. The compact design is possible thanks to the newly developed relay technology from this company. The relay can be integrated directly in devices such as motor starters. The elementary relay with forced guidance in accordance with EN 50205 consists of an N/O and an N/C contact. Energy consumption is reduced by up to 20% due to the low current consumption of the new relay. — Phoenix Contact GmbH & Co. KG, Blomberg, Germany www.phoenixcontact.com
Introducing pH sensors that are able to learn
Mettler Toledo

Mettler Toledo

Not knowing when pH sensors will require maintenance or if a sensor is going to fail unexpectedly can be a problem. A solution to this problem comes in the form of the trademarked technologies, Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM) and Sensors That Learn. New ISM algorithms allow pH sensors to actually learn from the conditions in a process. Sensors That Learn delivers more accurate sensor-health diagnostics more quickly than previous versions, and enhances the consistency of sensor-lifetime information. When an ISM sensor is connected to a PC running the iSense software, all relevant data are displayed on the software's iMonitor screen, allowing evaluation of the probe. — Mettler Toledo AG, Urdorf, Switzerland www.mt.com/pro

High-capacity twin-screw pumps provide smooth, pulseless flow
Michael Smith Engineers

Michael Smith Engineers

The 3P Pera Prinz Twin Screw Pumps (photo) are suitable for fluid-transfer applications that require a self-priming pump that delivers smooth, pulseless flows up to 1,700 m3/h and at pressures up to 55 bars. Recently introduced in the U.K. by this company, these high-capacity pumps are available in a choice of wetted materials. These positive-displacement pumps feature one or two pairs of screws (depending on the model) that are driven by external gearing so the screws never come into contact with each other. This ensures smooth, accurate flows and suitability for pumping shear-sensitive fluids. This twin-screw, ‘non-contact’ design also means high-suction lift capability (typically 7 to 8.5 m), very low NPSH values and less component wear and therefore a longer service life. 3P Prinz Twin Screw pumps are well suited to pumping fluids with low, medium and very high viscosities up to 35,000 cSt. — Michael Smith Engineers, Woking, U.K. www.michael-smith-engineers.co.uk

This new thermowell design prevents vibration
WIKA Alexander Wiegand

WIKA Alexander Wiegand

For applications in processes with high flowrates, this company is now offering thermowells in the new ScrutonWell design (photo). This variant dampens the excitation that leads to vibrations, which in turn can cause failures. The helical form of the stem is available in two versions: manufactured in a single piece or with helices welded onto it. Installation and removal are just as easy as with a standard thermowell. ScrutonWell thermowells are recommended when a thermowell fails the strength calculation, according to ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2010, and where other optimizations (shorter or stronger stem or support collar) are not desirable. In comparison with the conventional stem form, the new design reduces the excitations caused by vibration by more than 90%. — WIKA Alexander Wiegand SE & Co. KG, Klingenberg, Germany www.wika.com

A new version of this piping-system design software
tahoeworldcloudLaunched in March, HydroFlo 3 is the latest version of this popular piping-system design software. With HydroFlo, pumped, gravity and re-circulating flow systems, conveying any type of liquid, can be modeled and solved for their steady-state flows and pressures. This new version expands system capacities, provides additional editing features and improves analysis results and pump-curve plotting. The new Pipe Schedule Editor enables the creation, editing, importing and exporting of pipe schedules using both standard English and metric/SI nominal diameters. Three-phase separation in a single machine
Flottweg

Flottweg

Three-phase separation has now become a significant alternative in the food industry both for starch production for separating wheat starch and gluten or for extracting animal or vegetable fat and oil. In all these processes, two liquids have to be separated from a solid phase. Previous processes used a decanter or separator to separate the solid from the liquid phase, and then the liquid phase had to undergo another stage to separate the two liquids. That meant at least two machines were required. The Tricanter makes it possible to separate two liquid phases from a solid phase, as long as they cannot dissolve in each other. — Flottweg SE, Vilsbiburg, Germany www.flottweg.com
